988 Day: Compassionate Help. Anytime. Anywhere.
September 8, 2025
Congratulations to Terrance Brisbane: Acting President of First Coast Business Alliance
September 11, 2025Every year, on World Suicide Prevention Day, we pause to remember lives lost, uplift those who are struggling, and commit ourselves to building a community where no one suffers in silence. Suicide doesn’t just take lives—it shatters families, friendships, and communities. And yet, with awareness, compassion, and support, it is preventable.
At FreshMinistries, our work in substance abuse recovery shows us every day how deeply connected mental health and addiction can be. Many who struggle with drugs or alcohol are also battling depression, anxiety, or past trauma. Too often, shame and silence prevent them from reaching out for help. That’s why we focus on holistic healing—supporting not just sobriety, but the hope and resilience needed to keep moving forward.
Debunking Myths About Suicide & Depression
On World Suicide Prevention Day, breaking stigma begins with challenging the myths:
- Myth: Talking about suicide makes it worse.
Truth: Open, compassionate conversation can be the first step toward saving a life. - Myth: Depression is just sadness.
Truth: Depression is a complex medical condition, not a choice, and it’s treatable. - Myth: Only certain “types” of people struggle with suicidal thoughts.
Truth: Suicide does not discriminate—it can affect anyone, regardless of age, background, or success.
How You Can Support Others—and Yourself
Marking World Suicide Prevention Day is not just about raising awareness—it’s also about taking action. Here are real ways you can make a difference:
- Check in often. A simple “How are you, really?” can open the door to honesty.
- Listen without judgment. You don’t have to fix it—you just have to care.
- Encourage professional help. Therapy, counseling, or support groups can make all the difference.
- Take care of yourself, too. Supporting someone struggling is heavy. Don’t forget your own self-care: rest, connect with your support system, and set healthy boundaries.
Remember: being present, showing kindness, and offering resources can be life-saving. Your support can bring hope where it feels lost.
