The Desmond Tutu Program to End Global Hunger is not food bank/food pantry. Instead, it fits our mandate of providing education and business-focused opportunities to eradicate food insecurity long-term.

Who was Desmond Tutu?

FreshMinistries is honored to have been supported by Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu, a Nobel laureate and anti-apartheid leader. With his support and the program that bears his name, we made great strides towards our ultimate goal. Archbishop Tutu passed on December 26, 2021. While he is no longer with us in this world, his accomplishments in the name of humanity will continue to impact those in need now, and far into the future.

What makes the Desmond Tutu Program different from other charities?

The Desmond Tutu Program to End Global Hunger is not like any other food charity you know. We do not rely on food donations – we help underserved communities develop the capacity to grow their own food. Through the innovation of aquaponics, having acres of soil for food cultivation is not necessary in these areas. Food can be grown even if the only space available is bare pavement! FreshMinistries sees the future of food security being tied into solutions like aquaponics, which is an affordable, long-term, sustainable farming method.

What is aquaponics?

Farming through aquaponics allows FreshMinistries to be the best hunger charity since it empowers us to build an entire business that is run by, and directly supports, the people in the community. Aquaponics is a two-fold system that mimics a natural water ecosystem. Fish are raised in a controlled environment. Plants are raised alongside the fish using hydroponic (soilless, water-based) farming. The fish produce ammonia, which provides natural fertilizer to the plants. Basically, it’s a closed system where the plants have all the water they need, the fish grow and excrete waste that is the fertilizer for the plants, the plants absorb the nutrients and clean the water for the fish. At harvest time the community has both fish and produce – all without the need for soil or costly fish farms.
