With deep gratitude and admiration, we celebrate the extraordinary life of Kamele “Oupa” Seane — a beloved educator, bridge-builder, and lifelong advocate for peace, justice, and human dignity. Oupa’s journey began in the township of Soweto, South Africa, in 1960, during one of the most turbulent chapters of apartheid. Even as a young man, he refused to remain silent in the face of injustice. His courage during student boycotts and protests — and his willingness to risk imprisonment for the sake of equality — became the cornerstone of a life devoted to transforming pain into purpose.
After leaving South Africa, Oupa’s path carried him across continents — through Lesotho, Botswana, London, and New York — before he eventually found a home in Jacksonville, Florida. There, he turned his lived experience into a beacon of wisdom and compassion, dedicating his life to educating others about leadership, diversity, and intercultural understanding.
Oupa earned his B.A. in Mass Communication from Edward Waters College and his M.A. in Public Administration from the University of North Florida (UNF), where he later became a guiding force in the university’s pursuit of global citizenship and inclusion. As Director of the Intercultural Center for Peace and the Lufrano Intercultural Gallery, Oupa inspired countless students to see the beauty in differences and the power in dialogue. For him, diversity was never a duty — it was a way of life. His legacy also reaches far beyond the classroom. Through his leadership with the Jacksonville Sister Cities Association and his pivotal role in bringing Archbishop Desmond Tutu to UNF in 2003, Oupa wove Jacksonville into a global story of reconciliation and hope. His enduring friendship with Archbishop Tutu led to one of FreshMinistries’ most profound initiatives — the Desmond Tutu Program to End Global Hunger — a living tribute to their shared belief that peace begins with justice, and justice begins with feeding both the body and the soul. Oupa’s impact will continue to echo through every life he touched. His words reminded us that leadership is not about authority, but about integrity. His laughter reminded us that joy is an act of resilience. And his example reminded us that every human being — regardless of origin or circumstance — carries within them the power to change the world. Today, as we mourn his passing, we also celebrate a life beautifully lived and purposefully shared. Oupa Seane leaves behind a legacy of compassion, education, and global unity that will live on in the halls of UNF, in the mission of FreshMinistries, and in the hearts of all who knew him. May his memory continue to guide us — as a light that refuses to dim, a spirit that refuses to divide, and a voice that still whispers across nations: “Peace is possible, if we live it.”
