From Aquaponics to Advocacy: Building a Healthier Tomorrow Together
August 19, 2025
988 Day: Compassionate Help. Anytime. Anywhere.
September 8, 2025In Mpumalanga, South Africa, our aquaponics facility is proving how climate-smart farming can transform communities. What began as an innovative approach to food production has grown into a thriving hub for sustainable agriculture, education, and job creation.
Since its opening, the facility has welcomed over one thousand visitors, including students, teachers, farmers, and community members. Through guided tours and interactive learning, young people gain firsthand experience in aquaponics education and see how sustainable farming practices can shape the future of agriculture in South Africa.
The impact extends far beyond the classroom. The farm supplies fresh produce to local supermarkets, restaurants, schools, and families, strengthening food security in Mpumalanga. Partnerships with community organizations and local farms, such as the Harry Mnisi Foundation, Nyeleti and Benica Farm, and the Miles Trading restaurant, ensure that the benefits of the facility reach deep into the community.
Equally important is the economic development and employment opportunities created by this project. Today, several individuals are directly involved in the daily operations, supported by interns from the YES 4 YOUTH program and Conservation South Africa. These roles provide valuable hands-on skills in sustainable food production, helping young people build careers while supporting the region’s economy.
The Mpumalanga aquaponics facility is more than a farm — it is a working model of sustainable development. Each visitor who steps inside learns how aquaponics can address food insecurity, create jobs, and promote environmentally responsible farming practices.
By combining innovation with community engagement, this project demonstrates what’s possible when we invest in sustainable agriculture in South Africa: healthier communities, stronger economies, and hope for a more resilient future.
